Motorsport.com Eric Gilbert claims two photography awards in Sarthe Endurance Photos contest

For the second time in four years, Motorsport.com photojournalist Eric Gilbert was recognized for excellence in motor sport photography at the fifth annual Sarthe Endurance Photos contest.

Eric Gilbert captured first-place awards in Professional category and Jury’s Prize in World Endurance Challenge (WEC).

The Sarthe Endurance Photos contest invites professional and amateur photographers to share their passion for auto racing in a sixth month contest that totaled over 1,300 photos entered. Gilbert’s award-winning images bested 56 other professional entries.

“It’s with a great honor that I take this first prize in the Sarthe Endurance Photos contest,” said Eric Gilbert, vice president of operations, Motorsport.com. “Given the level of competition, it’s very humbling to get recognized for my passion of photography."

I’m also really proud of my photo because it’s fairly exclusive and perfectly convey the true Spirit of Le Mans.

In partnership with the ACO, the sport journalist union and Auto Hebdo magazine, the Sarthe Endurance photo contest aims to show the world of sportscar and endurance racing the majestic sights and scenery through the majestic eyes of photography.

“The 24 Hours of Le Mans brings the best drivers and teams on the planet on track, but also brings the best photographers from around the world,” he added. “I’m also really proud of my photo because it’s fairly exclusive and perfectly convey the true Spirit of Le Mans.”

Gilbert’s award-winning professional class image captures one of motor sports most iconic stretches of racing – the Mulsanne Straight – during last year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans.

“On the Mulsanne Straight, one can fully grasp the brutal force of the machine mixed with the courage of the men and women driving them, racing in a scenery combining nature, trees, vintage buildings, and random spectators,” Gilbert added. “I’m also proud of taking the "Jury's Special Prize” with my photos of the nine Audi Sport drivers attempting to take a selfie in some kind of funny organized chaos. Thanks to the ACO and the Conseil général de la Sarthe for organizing this contest and a special thanks to legendary Henri Pescarolo and the other members of the jury.”

Winning entries will be part of a showing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans museum until the next 24 Hours in June.
